Postural Dysfunction

Do you catch yourself slouching frequently? Do you find your back and neck getting stiff and sore at the end of the day? If so, you may be experiencing postural dysfunction. At Back In Action PT, our team of physical therapists can teach you how to find your ideal posture to eliminate these aches and pains once and for all!

People who perform stationary tasks for significant durations are highly susceptible to developing poor postures. Good posture, though, is essential for numerous reasons. When hunching forward, we are putting increased stress on the spine and placing the shoulders in a vulnerable position, making injury more likely.

Contact our Ocean Pines, MD clinic today to learn more about improving your posture and leading a pain-free, active life!

What Is Postural Dysfunction?

Postural dysfunction, also known as “poor” posture, occurs when our spine is positioned in unnatural positions, emphasizing the curves and putting the joints, muscles, and vertebrae under stress.

Posture refers to the position(s) of a person’s body in space. Prolonged postures, like sitting or standing for long periods, often lead to stiffness and soreness in the spine.

Slouching will cause a forward-head posture, rounded mid-back, and a flattened lower back. This, in turn, creates a strain on the muscles and joints, resulting in pain. Slouching posture can also increase pressure on the lumbar discs and eventually cause more serious problems.

What Can I Expect From Physical Therapy?

At your initial appointment, you will undergo a thorough evaluation with one of our highly-trained and Postural Restoration Certified physical therapists. Your evaluation will assess your postural dysfunctions, asymmetrical adaptations, interferences on your polyarticular chain, and accompanying symptoms.

After your evaluation, one of our Ocean Pines, MD physical therapists will create an individualized treatment plan based on your specific needs, in order to help you achieve postural restoration.

Back In Action PT focuses on restoring your postural dysfunction. Our treatments get to the root of the problem and aim to correct the dysfunction, rather than simply masking the symptoms.
